TOP 50 INTRODUCTION

“Vietnam’s 50 Best-performing Companies” (TOP 50) is an annual prestige ranking developed by Nhip Cau Dau Tu Magazine in tandem with Thien Viet Securities to honor the most effective companies on Vietnam stock exchange. The ranking process took counsel from many economists and business experts who were Harvard Business School graduates.

To objectively assess the management capacity of enterprises, TOP 50 evaluates businesses’ results of three consecutive fiscal years, based on three indicators: revenue, return on equity (ROE) and earnings per share (EPS).

TOP 50 has been organizing the ranking successfully for 12 successive years (2010-2023). In the past twelve years, we have seen the awe-inspiring growth of Vietnamese companies, alongside the steady booming of the Vietnamese economy. Therefore, TOP 50 2023 will specially honor companies bigger in size, greater in market value and robust growth rate, who are worth to be the pride of our country.

THE SURVEY METHODOLOGY

The ranking methodology consists of two key steps:

Step 1: Conditions for participation

We collected data from the audited financial statements of the companies which are listed on HoSE and HNX. The chosen ones must satisfy the following conditions:

1. Market capitalization of 1.500 billion VND or more (as of April 3nd, 2018).

2. Revenue in the three years preceding the survey year (2015, 2016, 2017) is VND 250 billion or more.

3. Net profit of the three years preceding the survey year (2015, 2016, 2017) is VND 25 billion or more.

Based on the above criteria, 124 companies were qualified for further evaluation.

Step 2: Ranking companies

Selected companies are ranked based on SR-CAGR, ROE, stock return in the past 3 years (2015-2017).

1. 124 companies are categorized into different sectors (according to ICB standards). Each company receives a separate score for each metric based on where it ranks within its sector, then all scores are added up (weightings: 35% for SR-CAGR, 35% for ROE, 30% for stock returns) to derive the composite score.

2. Select the best companies from each sector.

3. Exclude companies with negative SR-CAGR and stock returns.

4. Rank companies by their highest composite score and select the best 50.

Note:

Stock returns: Total return to investors includes both price appreciation and dividend paid to an investor in the company’s stock. The figures are based on the assumption that the owner sold the stocks at the end of 2017 after holding them for 3 years. It is calculated based on buying and selling at closing prices, including reinvestment of cash dividend on ex-dividend date.
